Week 10 football playoff scenarios
Week 10 football games feature many scenarios for all the LeFlore County teams aside from Spiro, which won’t make the playoffs, along with Talihina and Arkoma, which have both clinched playoff spots.
For the other schools, either making the playoffs or district positions will be decided in Friday’s game and as Sir Walter Scott once said, “Oh, what a tangled web we weave.”
He also said something about practicing to deceive which does not fit this narrative.
Friday’s lineup features Heavener at Bethel, Broken Bow at Poteau, Antlers visiting Spiro, Hartshorne at Panama, Pocola traveling to Haskell, Talihina hosting Mounds, and Arkoma going to Copan.
Heavener (3-6 and 3-3) is currently in a three-way tie for third place along with Bethel and Prague, and Hugo and Roland a game back.
For the Wolves, a win would get them into the playoffs for the second time in three years. They would be third if Hugo wins at Prague or fourth if Prague wins. If Bethel wins, but Prague also loses, there would be a three-way tie for fourth place between Heavener, Prague and Hugo, so fourth place would come down to district points.
However, if Bethel and Prague win, Heavener will be out of the playoffs.
Poteau’s situation is even more complicated after last week’s loss to Hilldale. The Pirates are in fourth place in the district, one game behind the three teams tied for the lead in Ada, Broken Bow and Sallisaw.
The Pirates could finish third or fourth with a win and miss the playoffs for the first time since 2012 with a loss and a Hilldale win over Tulsa McLain.
If Poteau wins and Ada defeats Sallisaw, the Pirates are the third seed in the playoffs. If Sallisaw and Poteau win, the Pirates are fourth.
Pocola is in second place, one game ahead of Panama and Haskell. The Indians are second with a win. If Haskell defeats Pocola, the Indians could drop to third.
Panama is in the playoffs with a win at Hartshorne. If the Razorbacks lose and Haskell wins, the Haymakers are third and Panama could sit out the playoffs due to the head-to-head loss to Hartshorne.
If Panama and Haskell both lose, they are in a three-way tie for third with Haskell and Hartshorne and the playoff spots would be determined by district points. Panama and Haskell both have 30 district points while Hartshorne has zero.
To get into the playoff scenarios regarding points, it would take a book to list. For Panama, the task is simple, win at Hartshorne and then there isn’t anything else to worry about as they are third.
So those are the four key games for county teams.
Spiro (0-9 and 0-6) could only play the spoiler role as Antlers is in a three-way tie for third place with Wilburton and Henryetta. Vian is first thanks to the 45-13 win over Valliant Thursday. Valliant is second, third and fourth place will be determine by the Antlers at Spiro, Morris at Wilburton and Henryetta at Atoka games.
Talihina and Mounds features a matchup of teams with perfect records. Talihina is 9-0 and 6-0 while Mounds is perfect in the other direction at 0-9 and 0-6. The Golden Tigers are district champions no matter what happens as the worst that could happen would be a tie for first with Allen.
Talihina won the head-to-head meeting with Allen so the Tigers would go into the playoffs as the top seed.
Arkoma is in fourth place in its district and makes the playoffs no matter what. As there are only five teams in the district and the Mustangs defeated Gans. If Arkoma defeats Copan, the Mustangs, Copan and Webbers Falls would be tied for second, if the Warriors win over over Gans.
That would leave the playoff seeding up to district points. If Arkoma wins and Webbers Falls loses, Arkoma would finish second and get a home playoff game. If Copan and Webbers Falls both win, Arkoma would be fourth.
